Customers come to the counter with an object and a price they want. You appraise: touching an item shows you where it has been, which is how you learn what it is really worth and what the person is not saying. Then you make an offer. Run the shop well enough to make rent, and the nights open up.
Through appraisal. Reading an object shows you the scene it came from, and five customers pawned something they should not have. The scenes are what the object remembers, so they arrive by doing the job rather than by a separate unlock. Everyone is an adult.
